IDeA Annual Healthy Communities Conference

I was recently asked to speak at the IDeA, Improvement and Development Agency annual Healthy Communities Conference. It was a great opportunity to highlight what we are doing in Kent to help reduce inequalities and face up to the realities of the increasing numbers of elderly people.

Health inequalities are a major challenge across the United Kingdom and Kent is no exception. I do not think it is right that there is still in 2009 such a massive difference on life expectancy depending upon where you live. I have tried to introduce some measures in Kent and I know that more needs to be done.

In my role as Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services I am becoming continually aware how changing demographics are resulting in the increased numbers of elderly people, people with dementia and adults needing special care. It was good at the IDeA conference to talk around these issues and to instigate debate around potential measures to face up to these major challenges and find effective solutions.
